Take a Risk at Being Bad at Something New

When was the last time that you risked being bad at something new? Really got out of your comfort zone and were willing to make a fool out of yourself if it turned out really bad?
Why would you even do that?
Oh, so many reasons…
- To check something off your to-do list or your bucket list or your f*** it list
- To see if you liked it (Green Eggs and Ham anyone?)
- To see if you could do it
- To learn something new
- To expand
- To have FUN
Ahhh, to have fun. That is a big one. All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl. Everything doesn’t have to be about business or perfection or part of your strategy. You are allowed to do something just because it’s fun. What is the worst that can happen? You find out that it really isn’t fun?
What’s the best thing that can happen? You had a great time? And…maybe you learned something new? Maybe you found a new passion? It helped expand your expertise or gave you new skills to link to what you already do? Perhaps it did nothing else but flexed your cognitive or physical skills, but they do need flexing from time to time.
It could help strengthen your confidence. It could be a great Instagram moment. It could give you a story to tell all your friends. It could boost you out the rut you were trying to get out of. It could be a welcome distraction for something else that you could really use a distraction from.
It could help you to be brave. You can’t be brave unless you’re at least a little scared. So if you are a chicken, it would be a good way to conquer that.
Also, it could just be fun for the sake of being fun!
You already do this.
Doing something you’re bad at that makes you happy is not a new phenomenon.
Do you sing because it makes you happy? The majority of people will sing in their car, in their shower, when they are home alone because it makes them happy. Not because it makes anyone else happy. Not because they are good at it. Yet they do it anyway. So, just look at new adventures with that same kind of attitude.
Now is a good time to try something new.
2020 is going to be one for the history books…so many, many, MANY things did not go according to plan. So what have you got to lose? And everyone is being so generous, in so many areas, that you can learn new things at a discount or even for free.
You can indulge in some self-care with some exercise or spiritual practices. (Hint: having fun is also a good self-care exercise)
There are many things you could try that could help your business, or help you connect with your family or your community. Maybe you could try something your kids or your spouse want to do, how much would they appreciate that effort?
You could change your environment. Maybe you’re a city slicker, go for a hike in the woods and see if you can find a new perspective and appreciation.
If you have extra time on your hands you can bring up YouTube and let them help you through some DIY projects. Maybe you can fix it. Maybe you don’t need a professional.
There are a million and one reasons to take risks at being bad at something. Technically you really can’t lose because it’s just as important to know what you don’t like as it is to know what you do like.
BONUS: If you try it now and you are sincerely bad at it (whether you had fun or not) you can just blame it on the 2020 juju.
